Specialty Valve Problems and the Right Fix

Sampling from the process line is contaminating the sample or the line

A standard valve leaves residual product in the sample port between draws. Every QC sample contains carryover from the previous one. Opening the sample port also exposes the process stream to ambient contamination.

Solution: Sanitary aseptic sampling valve steam-sterilises the port before each draw. Zero carryover, no ambient exposure.

Steam trap is blowing live steam, energy and pressure loss

A failed-open steam trap passes live steam into the condensate return, wasting energy, reducing system pressure, and overloading downstream equipment. In dairy and pharma SIP systems, this destabilises sterilisation temperature.

Solution: Balanced-pressure thermostatic steam trap closes against steam, opens for condensate. No live steam loss, no manual adjustment.

Tank overpressure event damaged the vessel or blew a gasket

Without a correctly set pressure relief valve, CIP steam supply surges, gas generation, or thermal expansion can pressurise a closed vessel beyond its rating, a safety and regulatory compliance failure.

Solution: Sanitary automatic pressure relief valve opens at the set pressure and reseats automatically. No operator intervention required.

Constant pressure valve hunting, downstream pressure oscillating

A poorly sized or worn pressure regulating valve causes downstream pressure to cycle above and below setpoint, affecting dosing accuracy, flow rates, and downstream equipment performance.

Solution: Hygienic constant pressure valve maintains setpoint within 0.05 bar across varying flow conditions.

Where Specialty Sanitary Valves Are Installed

Pharmaceutical QC SamplingIn-line aseptic sampling from sterile manufacturing lines, API solutions, bioprocess broths, injectable batches. Aseptic sampling valve sterilises the port between draws. Required by FDA and EU GMP batch testing protocols.
Dairy and Food Steam SystemsSteam supply to pasteurisers, jacketed vessels, and CIP steam generators. Thermostatic steam traps remove condensate from steam lines without releasing live steam, preventing pressure loss and sterilisation temperature deviation.
Process Pressure ManagementTanks, reactors, and closed-loop systems in pharmaceutical, food, and chemical plants. Automatic pressure relief valves are mandatory under FDA PED and EU PED for any pressure vessel above atmospheric rating.
Beverage and Fermentation PressureConstant pressure valves stabilise downstream pressure in carbonation systems, pressurised fermentation lines, and bright tank transfer, preventing CO2 loss and maintaining consistent fill quality in beer and sparkling beverage lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sanitary sampling valve and when is it required?
A sanitary sampling valve allows a small process sample to be withdrawn from a live production line without opening the system to contamination. In pharmaceutical and bioprocessing, the aseptic sampling valve uses a steam-sterilisable membrane or capsule at the sample port. In beverage and dairy, a simpler hygienic design with CIP-cleanable internals and FDA-compliant seals is sufficient.
What is a sanitary steam trap and why does it need to be hygienic?
A steam trap automatically discharges condensate from steam lines without releasing live steam. In dairy and pharmaceutical CIP/SIP systems, the trap body is part of the hygienic system and must meet the same Ra 0.8 um surface, 316L material, and dead-leg-free design standards as the rest of the piping.
When do I need a sanitary pressure relief valve?
A sanitary pressure relief valve is required on any closed processing vessel, tank, or piping section that can be over-pressurised, either by product gas generation, pump pressure, thermal expansion, or CIP steam supply failure. Regulatory authorities including FDA and EU PED require pressure relief protection on all process vessels rated above atmospheric.
