Sanitary ball valves regulate the flow through the process line by rotating a bored ball within a sealed housing.

One quarter turn of the valve stem allows for rapid shut-off from a fully open to a fully closed position.

This, combined with their simple construction and sealing ability, makes stainless steel ball valves some of the most popularly specified valves.

## How Does a Sanitary Ball Valve Work?

The process is quite simple. There is an open-ended ball with holes that fits into the valve body and is kept in place by two seats. If the ball’s bore aligns with the pipe, fluid will pass through unhindered.

A 90-degree turn of the stem rotates the ball, thus positioning its solid wall opposite the fluid flow and shutting it off entirely.

This feature, among others, sets the full-bore sanitary ball valve apart from others.

Since the valve is open, there is no hindrance to the flow; this is important in applications where pressure loss should be kept at a minimum.

It also allows for effective cleaning during the CIP procedure since there are no dead zones within the valve.

The seat material determines chemical compatibility and temperature range. [HEYI’s sanitary ball valves](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/taxonomy/product_cat/sanitary-ball-valves.md) use PTFE seats as standard.

PTFE is chemically resistant to almost all types of process media and cleaning solutions used in food or pharmaceutical applications, as well as temperatures ranging from -40°C to 200°C.

## Sanitary Ball Valve Types

### Tri-Clamp Ball Valve

The tri-clamp design is the common type for a sanitary piping system. The quick-release clamp connection allows the valve to be detached for inspection or maintenance without the need for any tool other than the wing nut.

This suits any production environment where valves are cleaned or inspected on a regular schedule.

HEYI also offers a Teflon-lined [tri-clamp ball valve ](https://www.hyflowtech.com/product/tri-clamp-ball-valve/)for applications where the process fluid or cleaning agent is too aggressive for standard stainless contact surfaces.

The Teflon lining insulates the ball and body from direct chemical exposure, extending service life in chemical and solvent processing environments.

### Three-Piece Ball Valve

The three-piece design splits the valve body into three bolted sections, with the ball and seats in the central section.

Removing the two end bolts allows the ball and seat assembly to be lifted out without disconnecting the end connections from the piping.

This makes the maintenance and replacement of seals easier and faster compared to the one-piece and two-piece designs.

The [three-piece ball valves ](https://www.hyflowtech.com/product/three-piece-ball-valve/)are usually preferred on pharmaceutical and biotech processing lines, as valve disassembly for inspection and validation is included in the regular maintenance procedure.

### 3-Way Ball Valve

In the [3-way ball valve,](https://www.hyflowtech.com/product/three-way-ball-valve/) there are three ports instead of the usual two ports.

The ball inside contains an L-shaped or T-shaped bore. An L-port routes flow between two of the three ports in any given position.

A T-port can connect all three ports simultaneously, enabling blending or bypass configurations.

The three-way ball valve is used in tank switching manifolds and sampling manifolds or in places where a valve is required to control two paths from one valve.

It eliminates the number of connections in the piping system, thereby reducing the chances of leaks and contamination.

### Flanged Ball Valve

Flanged stainless steel ball valves are connected to pipe flanges.

This type of connection is applicable in pipelines that are relatively larger in diameter and high-pressure pipelines where tri-clamp connections are not available.

Flanged designs are commonly used in industrial chemical processing and on utility connections to food and beverage production systems.

The Sanitary Flanged Ball Valve uses flat-face or raised-face flanges conforming to ISO 2084 / DIN 11864 hygienic flange standards for secure, leak-free pipeline connections.

### Bottom Ball Valve

A bottom ball valve is installed at the bottom of the tank or vessel to ensure total draining.

The valve body is placed flat on the bottom of the tank, and the full-bore design allows all kinds of viscous materials to drain easily.

This type of valve is frequently used in mixing tanks, blending vessels, and storage tanks in food and cosmetics industries.

### [Butterfly-Style Ball Valve](https://www.hyflowtech.com/product/sanitary-butterfly-style-ball-valve/)

This valve is the combination of the sealing capability of a ball valve and the slim design of a butterfly valve.

It makes use of a handle and body design like that of a butterfly valve, sealing against a ball and not on the edge of the disc.

This works well for installation where space is limited and where the body size of a standard ball valve will be too big.

### Mini Ball Valve

Mini stainless steel ball valves are used for small diameter lines in instrumentation work, sampling points, and vents/drains.

They are compact enough to work in a tight installation environment in panels or tubes, performing the full-bore shut-off operation of a regular ball valve at a smaller scale.

### Threaded Ball Valve

Threaded valves use NPT, BSP, or SMS thread connections and are used in piping systems where clamp or flange connections are not practical.

They suit fixed piping installations on utility lines and process connections where the valve position is not expected to change frequently.

## Manual vs Actuated Operation

Manual ball valves use a handle for direct operation and are suited to low-frequency applications where an operator controls flow by hand.

For automated lines, HEYI offers both pneumatic and electric-actuated versions.

Pneumatic actuators use compressed air and are the standard choice for high-cycle automated systems.

They respond quickly and integrate with standard solenoid valve control circuits.

Electric actuators use a motor for positioning and suit applications without a compressed air supply, or where precise intermediate positioning between open and closed is needed.

Both actuated options carry 3A, FDA, and CE certifications, and single-unit orders are accepted with standard stock items shipping within one to seven days.

## Valve Selection Summary

| **Type** | **Connection** | **Best Application** | **Key Advantage** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tri-clamp | Clamp ferrule | Food, pharma, dairy | Quick disassembly |
| Three-piece | Clamp or weld | Pharma, biotech | Easy ball and seat access |
| 3-way ball valve | Clamp or flange | Tank switching, blending | Single valve replaces multiple fittings |
| Flanged | Bolt flange | Industrial, large diameter | Handles higher pressure |
| Bottom | Tank mount | Tank drainage | Full bore, flush-mount drainage |
| Mini | Tube fitting | Instrumentation, sampling | Compact, tight spaces |
| Threaded | NPT/BSP/SMS | Fixed utility lines | No clamp hardware needed |

## Materials and Certifications

HEYI’s sanitary ball valves are available in AISI 304 and AISI 316L stainless steel with Ra 0.4 µm interior surface finishes as standard.

PTFE seats provide chemical resistance across a wide range of process fluids and cleaning agents.

All configurations carry 3A, FDA, and CE certifications, which cover the compliance requirements for most regulated applications in North America, Europe, and beyond.
