## **Quick answer**

Before requesting a quote for a PLC multi-hopper powder dosing system, work out what your production line needs. Your ingredients and production requirements will determine how the system should be configured. A good RFQ explains those requirements clearly and sets out how you’ll check that the equipment performs as expected.

## **1. How Many Ingredient Hoppers and Weighing Stations Do You Need?**

The number of powders your production line is expected to handle determines how many ingredient hoppers you may need. For example, you may need five dedicated hoppers if your recipe uses five ingredients that must remain available throughout production. However, five weighing stations aren’t necessarily needed for those five hoppers. Depending on your dosing requirements and production speed, all five hoppers can feed into one shared weighing container.

Some ingredients can be measured simultaneously if you have separate weighing stations, potentially increasing output. However, this arrangement can be more complex because it requires additional weighing equipment and coordination between stations. A hopper can also be shared by different ingredients between runs if cleaning and changeover are practical.

The weighing arrangement can be determined by the number of batches you require per hour. A scale designed for large quantities may not provide the resolution needed to measure small additives accurately, making dose range critical when selecting weighing equipment.

The manufacturer should show how the proposed arrangement meets your production requirements. HYFLOWTECH offers [OEM customization](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/oem.md) for projects requiring different hopper sizes or connections.

## **2. What Should the PLC Control and Display?**

During dosing, operators should be able to see which ingredient is being added, its target and actual weights, and any active alarms.

The PLC can coordinate weighing signals, feeders, discharge equipment, and the dosing sequence. HYFLOWTECH’s [sanitary semi-automatic powder hopper](https://www.hyflowtech.com/product/sanitary-semi-automatic-powder-hopper/) is an example of a PLC-equipped powder hopper with an English touchscreen. However, that doesn’t mean the standard product supports every function required for a multi-hopper system.

Some systems reduce feeder speed as the target weight approaches to limit overshoot. Your RFQ should establish whether that function is required, what operators can control manually, and who can change settings. The manufacturer should demonstrate how the proposed system handles these operations.

## **3. How Should Recipes Be Stored, Protected, and Applied?**

One incorrect recipe setting can affect an entire batch. When a line handles several products, operators need a reliable way to select approved recipes without accidentally changing their values.

Each recipe may contain ingredient quantities, dosing order, and feeder settings. Once selected, its settings should be applied to the correct feeders and dosing steps. The system should also provide a way to confirm the selected recipe before production begins.

Your RFQ should state how many recipes need to be stored and who can edit them. Some facilities restrict changes to supervisors, while others require records showing who changed a setting and when.

If a controller needs replacing, operators should be able to recover the approved recipes from a backup rather than rebuilding them manually. Ask how that process works.

## **4. How Will Dosing Accuracy Be Accepted With Your Powders?**

The dosing accuracy should be accepted only when the agreed weight is delivered by the equipment within the permitted tolerance during testing. For instance, if 1,000 g is the target dose and the tolerance is ±5 g, 995 g to 1,005 g is the range that each tested dose must fall within to pass the criterion.

Your actual powders should be used during testing where practical. A powder dosing hopper may struggle with cohesive or fine powders but may perform well with free-flowing granules. That’s why the accuracy figure obtained from another material is not always reflective of how the equipment will perform in your facility.

Before testing, get into agreement on how many consecutive doses will be measured and the outcome if a result falls outside the tolerance. Each measurement should be recorded during the factory acceptance test (FAT) so it’s easy to check whether the defined acceptance criteria were met.

If stopping and restarting the feeder or hopper refilling is a part of your production process, mention those conditions in the test. Doing so makes it easier to determine whether the equipment can maintain the required accuracy during standard operation.

## **5. What Happens During a Shortage, Timeout, or Power Loss?**

The interruption should be detected, and the incomplete batch should be prevented from being released without review. The control system determines the equipment’s exact response, but there should be a defined action for every fault.

For instance, dosing should be paused, and the PLC should alert the operator when the hopper runs out of powder. However, only a system with the necessary shortage detection makes this possible. After refilling the hopper, resume dosing only after checking that the system can safely account for the amount already supplied.

Likewise, a dosing timeout should prompt the system to halt the affected dosing step and flag the batch for review. A timeout means the equipment was unable to reach the target weight within the allowed period, prompting the operator to investigate before production resumes.

The equipment should shut down safely if the power fails. And when the power comes back, the system should require the operator to review the batch before proceeding or recover the interrupted batch information and permit a controlled restart.

These are recommended responses, not functions guaranteed on every PLC-equipped hopper. Include them in your RFQ and have the manufacturer demonstrate them during the FAT.

## **6. How Quickly Can Operators Change Materials and Clean?**

A [powder filling](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/powder-filling-machine-working-principle-and-selection.md) hopper does not have a fixed changeover time. It may take less time to change a simple powder than to switch between ingredients that need thorough cleaning.

The design of the equipment can also affect how long production must stop. For instance, cleaning is easier with a removable feed screw because it enables operators to reach areas where powder collects. That said, additional cleaning might be required if residue remains around discharge connections or seals.

[The cleaning method ](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/cip-cleaning-process-guide.md)can also affect the changeover time. Dry cleaning can help with the removal of certain powders, whereas others require wet washing. Those handling allergens may also need to verify the removal of the previous ingredient before restarting production.

When sending an RFQ, ask the manufacturer to demonstrate the complete changeover and mention the time it takes. This way, you’ll have a measurable figure that you can compare between suppliers.

## **7. Which Drawings, Logs, and FAT Records Will Be Supplied?**

Before shipment, you need evidence that the equipment meets the agreed requirements.

The FAT should cover the functions specified in your RFQ. Depending on the system, that may include weighing checks, dosing trials, recipe operation, and fault responses. Its report should record test conditions, actual results, and unresolved issues.

The documentation package may include a general arrangement drawing for installation planning, electrical schematics, and a PLC input/output list. Product-contact material details and maintenance instructions may also be necessary.

If your operation requires batch records, recipe change histories, or alarm logs, specify what the system must record and how those records can be retrieved. Don’t assume these functions come with the PLC.

Agree on the documentation and any tests that must be repeated after installation before placing the order. If you’re preparing a powder dosing RFQ, you can [share your requirements with HYFLOWTECH](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/contact-us.md) to discuss the proposed equipment configuration.
