## **Quick Answer**:

Brewery systems need sanitary fittings, tri-clamp connections, butterfly valves, ball valves, and CIP-compatible components to move wort, beer, water, and steam safely between vessels. Each connection point must be smooth, crevice-free, and cleanable with or without disassembly (depending on the components) to meet hygiene requirements. HEYI supplies the full range of brewery fittings and valves in SS304 and SS316L, manufactured to 3A, FDA, and CE standards.

## Required Fittings for Brewing Process

The pipe and fittings required for a brewery installation begin with the vessel connections. Each tank, fermenter, bright tank, and heat exchanger requires transfer fittings, drain connections, sampling ports, and pressure relief ports.

Each one of these connection points requires a fitting that is cleanable, inspectable, and dismantled without affecting the rest of the line.

Typical **brewery fittings** include elbows, tees, reducers, and crosses in sizes of OD sanitary tube. Standard sizes range from 1 inch (25.4 mm) up to 4 inches (101.6 mm) depending on the line flow rate.

All inner surfaces should be smooth and crevice-free, in order to prevent accumulation of wort and beer in any small pocket that cannot be cleaned by the cleaning solution.

[Hopper funnels](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/beer-hopper-funnel-applications.md) are a type of fitting specific to brewing, which is often forgotten in system design. Hopper funnels are employed at ingredient addition points, dry hop fittings, and powder transfer fittings.

A properly designed sanitary hopper supports cleaning at those addition points, whether through CIP where the system design allows or through quick disassembly for manual cleaning where it does not.

## What Valves Does a Brewery Need?

**Brewery valve** selection covers three main types, each playing a different role in the production line.

### Butterfly Valves

[Butterfly valves](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/taxonomy/product_cat/sanitary-butterfly-valves.md) are the heavy lifters at the brewery. These valves manage flow through transfer lines, outlet pipes of tanks, and CIP return circuits. The quarter-turn design makes opening and closing quick and simple and thus is ideal for frequent manipulation.

[Pneumatic butterfly valves](https://www.hyflowtech.com/product/pneumatic-actuator-butterfly-valve/) are capable of being integrated into the CIP control system to enable automation of their opening and closing cycles.

Seat material is the critical characteristic of a butterfly valve. EPDM seats withstand the corrosive nature of the cleaning chemicals and are the commonly used type.

### Ball Valves

[Ball valves](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/taxonomy/product_cat/sanitary-ball-valves.md) provide full-bore shut-off with no pressure drop in the open state. They are applicable in sample ports, drains, and product transfer lines within the brewery systems, where full shut-off is required after each use.

Three-way ball valves are very effective at outlets of tanks where flow can be directed either to the transfer line or the drain without using two valves.

**Three-Way Ball Valve**

The Sanitary Three-Way Ball Valve features an L-port or T-port ball configuration with three connection ports, enabling flow diversion, mixing or distribution within a single valve body.

### Diaphragm Valves

[Diaphragm valves](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/taxonomy/product_cat/sanitary-diaphragm-valves.md) are the preferred choice at any point in the brewing system where dead-leg elimination, full drainability, and SIP sterilization compatibility are design requirements.

The diaphragm acts as the barrier between the actuator and the product contact surface, which means that these valves can be drained completely and are also suited for SIP.

They are more expensive than butterfly or ball valves. They are specified only at specific points in the brewery.

**Sanitary Tri Clamp Diaphragm Valve**

The Tri Clamp Diaphragm Valve is a hygienic shut-off and control valve designed with tri-clamp (quick-connect) end connections for fast, tool-free assembly and disassembly.

## Why Tri-Clamp Connections Are Standard in Breweries

The [tri-clamp connection](https://www.hyflowtech.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/tri-clamp-hopper-funnels-work-principles.md) is widely used in hygienic process applications such as breweries.

The construction of the tri-clamp is that it comprises two ferrule ends, a gasket, and one clamp that tightens using a wing nut. All parts of the connection can be assembled or dismantled within a minute.

Such a fast-release design is useful in many aspects of the brewery operation, because sample ports, valve connections, sight glasses, and temperature probe fittings have to be able to be taken apart for cleaning without disturbing the pipes.

It is convenient for small craft breweries not to have dedicated single-use fittings in their systems.

The material of the gasket at the tri-clamp connection is selected according to the same principles as valve seats.

For example, EPDM is used for caustic services and general brewing, while silicone is chosen for high-temperature connections. It is a disposable element and has to be checked often.

A degraded or damaged gasket is a contamination hazard and the source of oxygen infiltration in fermentation.

## CIP Equipment and System Integration

CIP cleaning is a process that is carried out in all vessels, valves, and fittings of the brewery in accordance with a predetermined schedule. The CIP system should include specific supply and return piping as well as spray equipment for each vessel.

The valve positioning should provide contact of the cleaning solution with all product contact surfaces of the system.

Pneumatic valves with feedback on position are usually used in industrial CIP systems.

During the cleaning cycle, the control system opens certain valves to pass through each section of the process: caustic solution, rinse water, and sanitizer.

Manual valves are not consistent in CIP circuits and pose the risk of operator error.

Spray devices used in CIP, when installed in tanks, use the same fitting as other equipment in the system. Spray balls with tri-clamp connections can be easily removed from the tanks for verification purposes.

## Which Material Grade Is Right: 304 or 316L?

Most brewery installations use SS304 for the majority of fittings and valves. It handles water, wort, beer, and standard CIP chemicals without corrosion risk under normal brewing conditions.

SS316L becomes relevant in two situations. First, any connection point that regularly contacts chloride-bearing sanitizers benefits from 316L’s molybdenum content.

Second, breweries handling sour beers or fruit additions with high organic acid content may specify 316L at those specific points. This reduces the risk of surface pitting over time.

Surface finish matters as much as grade in a brewing environment. Internal surfaces polished to Ra 0.8 µm or better support effective CIP cleaning.

HEYI supplies **brewery fittings** and valves with mirror-polished internal surfaces to Ra 0.4 µm, verified by surface measurement documentation on each order.

## FAQs

### What size tri-clamp fittings are most common in breweries?

1.5 inch (38.1 mm) and 2 inch (50.8 mm) tri-clamp connections cover the majority of brewing applications. Larger 3 inch and 4 inch connections are used on tank outlets and high-volume transfer lines. Most vessels are designed around a consistent clamp size to simplify gasket stock and maintenance.

### Can the same valve be used across different brewing process stages?

The valve type can be consistent, but seat material and actuation method may vary. A butterfly valve on a hot liquor tank outlet needs a different seat than one on a cold side beer transfer line. Matching seat material to the temperature and chemical environment at each point is more important than standardizing on a single specification throughout.

### Where does HEYI fit into a brewery system?

HEYI supplies sanitary pipe fittings, tri-clamp fittings, butterfly valves, ball valves, diaphragm valves, hopper funnels, and CIP components in SS304 and SS316L, manufactured to 3A, FDA, and CE standards. Sourcing from a single supplier simplifies documentation and ensures consistent connection dimensions across the system.
